The sudden and inexplicable death of a young girl and a policeman leads Detective Chief Inspector Raymond Harper and Detective Inspector Elizabeth Bryant into a maze of intrigue and sudden death. DCI Harper and his team assemble a series of events that at first appear to have no relationship to each other. However as witnesses are interviewed and pieces of information begin to interlock, they realize they are searching for an assailant that kills at whim using an unknown weapon. Unravelling this puzzle leads them to the darker side of human nature and the very real results of actions associated with that dark side. In their pursuit of the killer, Harper finds that serial killers are not always driven by a murderous nature, but rather by the lack of a true and caring nurture. As the team investigate the various events, they meet people who care about others and also those that don’t. Along the way they find a killer for hire with apparently no conscience but merely a need for payment for services rendered. What the team discovers in the end is how a tragedy that occurred many years before can return to haunt those that abused their position in life.
